The hippopotamus, or hippo, is a large, mostly herbivorous, semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae, the other being the pygmy hippopotamus.
Hippos are known for their massive size, with adult males weighing up to 1,500 kg (3,300 lb) and standing up to 1.5 m (4.9 ft) tall at the shoulder. They have a barrel-shaped body, short legs, and a large head with a wide mouth filled with large teeth. They are well adapted to their aquatic lifestyle, with eyes, ears, and nostrils located on the top of their head, allowing them to remain mostly submerged while still being able to see, hear, and breathe.
Hippos are social animals that live in groups of up to 30 individuals. These groups are typically led by a dominant male, who maintains a territory and defends it from other males. Hippos communicate with each other through vocalizations, body language, and chemical signals, and they have a complex social structure.
Despite their herbivorous diet, hippos are considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa, responsible for more human fatalities than any other large animal on the continent. They are extremely territorial and can be aggressive towards humans, especially when they feel threatened or cornered.
Hippos are an important part of their ecosystem, playing a key role in maintaining waterways and wetlands. They also serve as a source of food for predators such as crocodiles and lions. However, hippos face a number of threats in the wild, including habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching for their meat and ivory teeth, and conflict with humans.
Conservation efforts are underway to protect hippos and their habitats, including the creation of protected areas and the enforcement of hunting bans. However, much more needs to be done to ensure the long-term survival of these magnificent creatures.
