The brown hyena, also known as the strandwolf, is a species of hyena that is native to southern Africa. Unlike its more well-known relative, the spotted hyena, the brown hyena has a shaggy, brown coat and a sloping back that gives it a distinctive appearance.
Brown hyenas are solitary animals that are primarily nocturnal, although they may be active during the day in cooler weather. They are omnivores and feed on a wide range of prey, including small mammals, insects, fruits, and carrion. They are also known to scavenge at human settlements and garbage dumps.
One of the most distinctive features of the brown hyena is its behavior when threatened. When confronted by a predator or other perceived threat, the brown hyena will raise the hair on its back and tail and give a loud, eerie growl that is said to sound like a "laugh". This behavior has earned the brown hyena the nickname "laughing hyena".
Despite its unique appearance and behavior, the brown hyena is a relatively little-known and understudied species. It is classified as a "near-threatened" species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to habitat loss, persecution by farmers, and accidental trapping in snares intended for other animals.
Conservation efforts are underway to protect the brown hyena and its habitat. One such effort is the Brown Hyena Research Project, which was established in 1996 to study the behavior and ecology of the brown hyena and to promote its conservation.
The brown hyena has a complex and often misunderstood relationship with humans. In some parts of southern Africa, it is revered as a spiritual and cultural symbol, while in others it is seen as a nuisance and a threat to livestock. By promoting greater understanding of this unique and fascinating species, we can work towards a future where the brown hyena and other African wildlife can thrive in their natural habitats.
