Are young adults expelled from the pride?

There is no hard and fast rule. One or more of the dominant males may drive off a young male, but young females are tolerated provided the pride is not too numerous for the available prey. Young males and females may leave the pride of their own accord. When a pride becomes too large, one or more female groups with one or more males may break away to form a new pride that in turn will have to establish its own home range. Female groups may also be taken over by nomadic males.

Another interesting phenomenon is that one or more males may hold tenure over two distinct prides of females.
