FAQ's of Volunteering at Kruger Park Hostel



Yes, as a volunteer you get two days off a week, which you can use to go on one of the tours or game drives we offer if there is space available. Even on your working days, you will have plenty of personal time.

We are a fun-loving bunch, and so are most of our guests, who come from across the globe.

Absolutely! You'll have ample time and opportunities to explore the surrounding areas and to experience game walks within the reserve independently. We also have mountain bikes and eBikes you can use.

Any expenses incurred at the bar will be your responsibility, albeit with a provided discount (20%). When joining guests on game drives and tours, the tour is covered, but you will be responsible for the entrance fees.

Couples are accepted for the assistant (half volunteer) positions.

Absolutely! We believe it’s crucial for you to have the full experience and to gather the necessary footage for our social media posts. Whenever there is a tour or game drive scheduled with paying guests and there is available space, you are welcome to join.

Your provided accommodation will be within the hostel, in a dorm room, which you may share with other guests. Please be prepared for a communal living experience and to interact respectfully with all guests sharing the space.

Yes, breakfast and dinner are included during your stay. We can cater to vegetarian dietary preferences but, unfortunately, are unable to accommodate vegan diets at this time. Please let us know of any dietary restrictions or preferences in advance, so we can prepare accordingly. As for lunch, there are normall left overs from the night before, or you can make a sandwich.

Yes, you should bring your own camera; however, a high-quality smartphone can also suffice. We recommend bringing a laptop, especially if you’re more comfortable editing photos and videos on it than on your phone. Other recommended items include a sunhat, good hiking shoes, sunscreen, a bathing suit, and t-shirts. Please ensure you are well-equipped to manage the climate and the activities you’ll be engaging in during your stay. It can get very hot in summer.

Volunteers will be asked to help with setting up for breakfast, checking in guests, social media, helping with the preparation of dinner, socializing with guests, and occasionally housekeeping. We also have

For half volunteers we expect about 4 hours per day and 5 days per week. The hours are quite flexible and depend on the number of volunteers we have.

Mayra is our volunteer coordinator and is also the go-to person for any questions or concerns. Mayra understands where you are coming from, as she was once a volunteer at the hostel.

If we have accommodation available, yes, you are welcome to extend your stay.

Not really, except that you are not allowed to walk around the reserve at night, as occasionally we have lions breaking in from the Kruger Park, and nighttime is their dinner time.

In summer, the weather is very warm, so bring shorts, t-shirts, sandals, and comfortable walking shoes.

Yes, we have a washing machine and dryer available for use.

At the hostel, we speak English, German, Portuguese, plus a few of the local languages. We have no language requirements for our volunteers, and many come to us to learn English.

If you phone can except eSims, this may be the easier and cheaper options and we have found that globalesim.app/ has the best deals. If you are going to buy a actual sim, Vodacom is probably the better option, as they have better coverage in our area. At the Hostel we have Wi-Fi avalible in most spots.
