Were lions ever found on continents other than Africa?

At one time lions occurred in Europe and the Middle East. They became extinct in Israel in the 13th century, in Pakistan in the early 1840s, in Iraq in about 1914 and in Iran in 1941. They were once widespread in India, but the last remaining lions are the endangered group of less than 200 animals found in the Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in the state of Gujarat.
