Cubs are born all year round, with females in the same pride often synchronizing births. In Kruger Park, the breeding peak seems to be from March to July.

After a gestation period of about 3.5 months, an average of two to four cubs weighing about 1.5 kg each are born and concealed in dense cover.

Cubs are born blind but their eyes open after three to 10 days. They walk within two weeks and are introduced to the pride at six to eight weeks, or later if there are older cubs in the pride. Weaning starts at 10 weeks and is completed within six months.
