Kruger Park Hostel is located at 313 Varing Street, Marloth Park, Mpumalanga, South Africa. Marloth Park is a wildlife conservancy next to Kruger National Park, and the hostel is approximately 20 minutes from Crocodile Bridge Gate, one of the most convenient southern entrances into Kruger.

Kruger Park Hostel is ideal for backpackers, solo travellers, couples, adventurous friends, digital nomads, wildlife lovers, and budget-conscious travellers looking for an affordable base near Kruger National Park. It suits guests who like a social atmosphere, shared meals, and real travel experiences rather than a formal lodge environment.

No. We are social but not a party hostel. Guests can expect communal dinners, sunset walks, campfire conversations, occasional themed or karaoke evenings, and a friendly shared atmosphere. But because many guests go on early safaris, the focus remains on wildlife, connection, and adventure rather than late-night partying.

Rooms, Comfort & Facilities

We offer:
  • Mixed dorm rooms (two 6-bed dorms)
  • Private rooms with shared bathrooms
  • Private ensuite rooms

Our dorms are generally mixed. We try to place women together where possible, but with only two dorm rooms this is not always guaranteed.

Kruger Park Hostel is a small-scale, personal hostel with a maximum of around 20 guests. This helps us keep the atmosphere friendly, the service personal, and the safari departures simpler and more guest-focused.

Yes. All beds and rooms have power outlets, and rooms have fans to help during the hot summer months. We also provide free high-speed Wi‑Fi throughout the hostel, and it is generally strong enough for video calls and remote work.

Meals, Drinks & Dining Style

No. Kruger Park Hostel does not have a standard shared backpacker kitchen. Our food experience is more structured and communal, with shared meals as an important part of the social atmosphere.

Guest cooking is limited:
  • Breakfast: You may cook your own eggs (raw eggs are provided).
  • Dinner: Only if you are cooking for the whole hostel.
  • Lunch: No guest cooking is allowed.

Typical meal times are:
  • Breakfast: 04:00–10:00
  • Dinner: 19:00 at the communal table
Many guests say the communal dinners are one of the most memorable parts of staying here.

Yes. We can cater for vegetarian diets and offer limited vegan options with at least 48 hours’ notice. Please tell us in advance so we can plan properly.

Tea, coffee and filtered water are available free of charge 24/7. Lunch is not served by the hostel, but there are nearby restaurants in Marloth Park where guests can eat during the day.

Game drives usually depart early:
  • Summer: around 04:30
  • Winter: around 05:30
Return is usually around 13:00–14:00, depending on sightings, route and season.

Yes, guests can join a game drive on the day they check out. We strongly recommend staying the night before any safari because departures are very early, especially for Kruger day safaris and camping trips.

Getting Here & Transfers

This section is especially useful for international travellers trying to work out airports, shuttles, self-drive routes, and local transport.

If you are driving, the preferred approach is via the Tenbosch Road entrance, which is the second entrance road off the N4 when coming from Malelane or Johannesburg. This is recommended because it is tarred all the way to Marloth Park.

No. A 4x4 is not required to reach Kruger Park Hostel.

One of the simplest options from Johannesburg is the daily shuttle service from O.R. Tambo International Airport to Marloth Park. According to our current directions page, this shuttle drops guests directly at the hostel.

Guests normally arrive via one of these airports:
  • O.R. Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg) — best for most international arrivals
  • Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMI / Mbombela) — about 1.5 hours away by road
  • Skukuza Airport — inside Kruger National Park, with transfer or car rental needed afterwards

Yes. We can arrange transfers to or from selected points including:

There are no normal taxi services in Marloth Park, so it is important to plan your transport in advance. Locally, guests usually move around on foot or by bicycle during the day. We also have free bicycles available for guests.

Location, Wildlife & Safety

A very important section, because staying in Marloth Park next to Kruger National Park is part of what makes the experience special.

We are approximately 20 minutes from Crocodile Bridge Gate, making Kruger Park Hostel a very practical base for day safaris, camping safaris, and independent self-drive visits into Kruger National Park.

Very possibly. One of the most unique parts of staying at Kruger Park Hostel is that wildlife often moves through Marloth Park itself. Guests may see kudu, zebra, giraffe, impala, warthog, mongoose, monkeys, and many birds around the property and surrounding streets.

No, the hostel is not fully fenced in the way a city property would be, and wildlife roams freely in Marloth Park. It is not safe to walk around at night because predators may move through the area after dark. We strongly advise guests to stay on the property at night and ask staff if unsure.

Yes. Do not leave food unattended, especially in outdoor or open communal spaces.

Marloth Park is generally considered a low malaria-risk area. There are usually fewer mosquitoes in winter, while repellent is recommended in summer. If needed, a clinic is located approximately 1 km from the hostel.

Booking, Payments & Cancellations

  • Full refund if cancelled 48 hours or more before arrival

Yes. Camping safaris require full prepayment.

Yes. Local shops generally accept both card and cash, although we still recommend carrying a mix of both where practical.

Volunteers & Long-Stay Guests

For travellers looking for more than a short stay, especially those interested in Worldpackers opportunities or longer immersion in Marloth Park.

Yes. Kruger Park Hostel accepts volunteers exclusively through Worldpackers.com.

The current minimum volunteer stay is 4 weeks.

Volunteer tasks may include cooking, baking, making yogurt, jam, muesli and rusks, stocking the pantry, and helping with general hostel tasks.
