Volunteers Wanted: Help Us Rehabilitate Rescue Horses at Our New Sister Hostel on the Indian Ocean

We’re excited to share a new chapter in the Kruger Park Hostel journey.

We have recently taken over Dune Beach Hostel, our new sister hostel located in Calanga, Mozambique, set within the coastal dunes overlooking the Indian Ocean. This is a wild, remote, and beautiful location, full of potential.

Dune Beach Hostel is not officially open yet. We are still busy renovating, restoring, and developing the property, and during this early phase we are looking for a small number of dedicated volunteers to join us on site.

A Unique Volunteer Opportunity

This is not a typical hostel volunteer role. Accommodation during this phase will be simple and off‑grid, with volunteers living in tents while renovations continue. In return, volunteers will be part of building something meaningful from the very beginning.

One of our most important projects at Dune Beach Hostel is the rehabilitation of two rescued horses that arrived malnourished and in poor condition. These horses are not here for riding or entertainment. Their wellbeing comes first.

The Horse Rehabilitation Project

Our goal is to give these horses time, care, and consistency so they can recover both physically and emotionally. Rehabilitation is a slow and intentional process, focused on trust‑building rather than performance.

Volunteers will assist with daily feeding, gentle grooming, calm beach and lake walks, washing horses with fresh water after ocean exposure, and spending quiet time helping the horses feel safe and relaxed around people.

No riding is involved, now or in the foreseeable future. This project is about patience, compassion, and healing.

This opportunity is best suited to people who are calm, patient, emotionally grounded, and genuinely interested in animal welfare. Volunteers should be comfortable with basic living conditions and able to follow routines and instructions consistently.

Previous horse experience is helpful but not essential. What matters most is attitude, respect for animals, and a willingness to learn.

Commitment & Practical Details

We are ideally looking for volunteers who can stay for 1 to 3 months. Consistency is important for the horses, and longer stays allow volunteers to make a real difference.
